$1 Million Powerball Ticket Sold in Madison, Wisconsin Expires

Players in Wisconsin had been urged to double-check their tickets before the prize expired. The unlucky player made their purchase at Kelley’s Market convenience store on Shopko Drive in Madison and a Wisconsin Lottery spokesman said "the $1 million will be returned to Wisconsinites in the form of property tax relief".

This is not the first time that a $1 million Powerball prize has gone unclaimed in the state. Two previous tickets sold in the village of Caledonia and the city of Eau Claire in 2009 and 2015, also expired. 

Since the game first launched in 1992, three Powerball jackpots; one from Georgia, one from Indiana and one from Florida have failed to be claimed. 

Powerball tickets expire if they are not claimed within a certain period of time from the drawing date. The length of time to claim a prize varies for each state. For example, in Iowa, players have one year to come forward, but in other states such as Florida and Connecticut, players have 180 days before the ticket expires. Ticket holders are advised to check with the state lottery for their jurisdiction to find out the claim period.
