$256 million Powerball jackpot won in Queens, NYC

The winning numbers were: 1, 31, 43, 55, 57, and 22, the Powerball. According to the NY Lottery, the winning ticket was purchased in Queens, at the Hua Lian Supermarket on Parsons Boulevard, Flushing.

The jackpot is valued at $256 million before tax, making it the fifth-biggest Powerball jackpot of 2024. Not an outstanding amount by Powerball standards, but we wouldn't turn it down!

This also marks the first Powerball jackpot won in New York for a few years; it was last won in September 2020, when the jackpot of $94.8 million was claimed by the creatively-named September 2020 LLC.

At the time of writing, the winner has not yet come forward to claim their prize, but when they do, they have an important choice to make. They can receive their winnings as an annuity, whereby they'll receive the full value of their win over the span of 30 annual payments, or they can opt to receive a one-off payment of $123.5 million.

Many lottery winners choose the lump sum, as it's still a life-changing amount of money, it's important to them to access it ASAP, and many believe (often correctly) that they can invest it themselves for greater returns than the annuity would have offered. In this case, we'll have to wait and see!
