Kentucky Couple ‘Cried For Hours’ After $1 Million Win
A boyfriend and girlfriend from Louisville have revealed how they cried tears of joy after finding out they had become millionaires in Saturday’s Powerball drawing, saying the big win couldn’t have come at a better time.
The happy couple matched all five main numbers - 9, 13, 42, 48 and 60 - just missing out on the Powerball of 18. They had purchased their ticket from Circle K #3303 on Valley Station Road the day before the draw, and were in reflective mood when they came forward to claim their prize.
“It’s overwhelming but such a huge stress relief,” said the pair, who asked lottery officials not to release their names. The man added: “We wouldn’t be sitting her if she hadn’t gone in to buy the tickets. We play when we can.”
The first clue that the couple had about their big win was when they went to a store to check their tickets. The clerk scanned the ticket and told them the payout was worth more than $600 so they would have to contact the Kentucky Lottery.
The man said: “I was sitting in the garage, when I pulled up the Kentucky Lottery app and began putting in my numbers. Next thing I knew, it read we’d won $1 million. I just sat in my car crying. I went inside and walked up to hug her and said, ‘We won the million dollars.’ We cried for hours.”
Winners Set Sights on Vacation
Speaking about how much the win meant to them, the girlfriend admitted it was hard to come to terms with just how much of a difference the money would make. “This couldn’t have happened at a better time and is a huge blessing,” she said. “It still hasn’t sunk in. I’m thinking, ‘Wow, here in the next couple of hours, our lives will change’.”
Following federal and state taxes, the couple’s final payout was $710,002. They are still thinking about exactly how they will spend the money, but they do plan to pay off debts and probably go on vacation.
There was one other Match 5 winner in the drawing on Saturday June 8th, with the ticket bought in South Carolina. There were no entries that matched five main numbers and added the Power Play option to boost their payout to $2 million.
The Powerball jackpot is currently worth $79 million ahead of the next drawing this Saturday, having rolled over three times in a row since North Carolina’s Charles W. Jackson won $344 million. Check the Numbers page after the latest drawing to see if you are a winner.
