Georgia Player Wins $478 Million Powerball Jackpot

The jackpot had not previously been won since August 12, when a Pennsylvanian ticket holder pocketed $213 million. It had built up to almost half a billion dollars over the last couple of months, and finally it has been won again.

The winning numbers for October 23 were 2, 15, 27, 29 and 39, and the Powerball number was 20. The Power Play multiplier was 2X, doubling the prize amount for thousands of players who added this option.

Among all the prizes paid out, two players - one from Pennsylvania and one from Texas - matched all five main numbers without the Powerball to win $1 million each. See the Powerball Numbers page to find out details of all the payouts in Wednesday’s draw.

Georgia’s Biggest Win

The only ticket holder to match all six numbers came from Georgia, making it the state’s seventh jackpot win since Powerball tickets went on sale in 2010.

It is also Georgia’s biggest win, surpassing the $246 million that was snapped up by William and Heather ten Broeke in September 2016.

The record winner now has 180 days to come forward and claim their prize. It has happened before that a jackpot won in Georgia has gone unclaimed - back in June 2011, a prize worth $77 million expired - so it’s vital to keep hold of your tickets and check them as soon as possible.

Another decision facing the winner will be whether to take the $478 million jackpot as an annuity or go for the cash option of $230.6 million. They can also choose to stay anonymous if they do not wish to go public.

The Powerball jackpot will now reset to $20 million for Saturday night. Drawings take place three times a week - on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday - and you can check your tickets after every one to see if you are a winner.
