Maryland’s Powerball Double Play Jackpot Goes Unclaimed
The Powerball Double Play jackpot won in Maryland on September 27 has gone unclaimed after the ticket holder failed to come forward in time. The player therefore misses out on the $10 million payout they would have been due.
Double Play was only launched in August and the jackpot won in Maryland marked the first time that anyone had landed the grand prize in the new $1 add-on game.
It was revealed that the winning ticket was sold at Rockville Exxon on Rockville Pike in Rockville. However, the win has now made history for a different reason - rather than be known as the first Double Play jackpot to be won, it will go down as the biggest prize ever to go unclaimed in Maryland.
The winner had 182 days from the draw date to claim the prize, so when nobody came forward by 4pm on Monday, the money went back to the state.
Speaking about unclaimed prizes, lottery spokesperson Seth Elkin said: "It happens very infrequently with a big winner. By far, most of the unclaimed prizes that occur are for smaller amounts."
No previous unclaimed prize in Maryland has been worth more than $1 million.
Double Play is currently available in 13 states. To take part, you just have to select the Double Play option and pay an extra $1 per line. Your numbers from the main draw are also entered into the Double Play draw, which randomly selects another set of winning numbers - five main numbers from 1 to 69 and a Powerball from 1 to 26.
The jackpot is fixed at $10 million in every draw. You can see the Powerball and Double Play Numbers right after every drawing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
