Powerball Jackpot Reaches $1.2 Billion

It has been two and a half months since the jackpot was last won, dating back to the $1.079 billion payout that went to a Californian player on July 19.

There has been a steady rise over the past few weeks, and the jackpot topped $1 billion again on Monday night. This made it the first time in Powerball history that the grand prize had reached 10 figures twice in a row, following the big win in July.

The winning numbers for Monday were 12, 26, 27, 43 and 47, with a Powerball of 5. More than 2.7 million prizes were won, including two payouts of $1 million (to players in Delaware and Michigan). Another two ticket holders - from New York and South Carolina - also matched all five main numbers without the Powerball, but they had added the Power Play option so their prize was doubled to $2 million.

If anyone had matched all the numbers, they would have been rewarded with $1.066 billion and become the fourth-biggest winner of all time. Instead, the jackpot is now into the top three. The advertised $1.2 billion has a cash value of $551.7 million.

If the jackpot rolls again on Wednesday, it will move closer towards the record for the biggest lottery prize ever. For several years, this belonged to the three winners who split a $1.586 billion jackpot in January 2016.
