Florida Player Wins $396 Million Powerball Jackpot
A ticket holder from Florida matched all the numbers in Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing to win $396 million. It is the first time that the jackpot has been given away since a Californian player won $150 million on November 2nd.
The winning numbers for January 29th were 9, 12, 15, 31 and 60, with a Powerball of 2. There were over 1.3 million prizes won altogether on a special night for many players, including three tickets that matched all five main numbers without the Powerball to net $1 million each. Another one of these entries was sold in Florida, with the other two sold in Ohio and Virginia.
Go to the Powerball Numbers page for more information about the latest drawing, including a table of all the payouts. You can also find details about the number of winners from each state.
The latest jackpot was the biggest to have been seen on the game since Manuel Franco from Wisconsin won a prize of $768 million on March 27th 2019. He came forward the following month and vowed to spend his money wisely.
Florida has now had 13 jackpot winners since joining the game in January 2009. The latest winner has 180 days to claim their prize and can then decide whether to take the $396 million jackpot as an annuity or the cash option of around $274 million. Federal taxes apply regardless of which option the winner takes, but there is no state tax on lottery winnings in Florida.
Mississippi Joins Powerball
The jackpot will now reset to $40 million for the next drawing on Saturday night, while history will also be made in Mississippi as tickets go on sale in the Magnolia State for the first time.
Mississippi became the 45th state to set up its own lottery when a bill was passed by the House of Representatives back in August 2018. The Mississippi Lottery Corporation was established later that year and scratch-offs went on sale last November.
Draw games have now become available and residents of the state will finally be able to take part in Powerball by visiting their local retailers rather than travelling to neighboring jurisdictions. Alabama, Utah, Nevada, Hawaii and Alaska are now the only states without their own lotteries, and as such they are unable to offer Powerball.
It remains to be seen how long it is before someone from Mississippi wins the Powerball jackpot, but thousands of players will be hopeful of striking it lucky in the first drawing this weekend. Check out the Powerball Numbers page straight after the draw to see how Mississippi fared and to see your results.
