New York Player Wins $245 Million Powerball Jackpot

New York Player Wins $245 Million Powerball Jackpot

There were celebrations at a Staten Island supermarket over the weekend after the store sold a ticket worth $245 million for Saturday night’s big draw. It is the seventh time in Powerball history that the jackpot has been won in New York, and the search is now on for the lucky player.

Staten Island Excitement

The numbers drawn on Saturday August 11th were 5, 43, 56, 62 and 68, with Powerball 24. The winning ticket was sold at the Stop & Shop at 2754 Hylan Boulevard in New Dorp, and the New York Lottery revealed that it had been a Quick Pick entry.

The manager of the store, Larry DiAntonio, was delighted to have sold the lucky ticket and is now looking forward to finding out more about the winner. He said: “No one notified me before I came in so I was like...what’s going on here? Now it’s exciting, feels good the store sold the winning ticket. Hopefully it’s someone on Staten Island. I live on Staten Island, hopefully it’s someone I know.”

Montana Herrera, who works the lottery desk at the Stop & Shop, added that it had been busier than usual on Sunday morning. “Most of the people that come here are regulars, so everyone is like ‘who won? Do you know who won?”

The winner has one year to come forward and claim their prize, and can decide whether they wish to take the full jackpot amount as an annuity or a reduced cash sum of $147.8 million. They also have the option to set up a trust to claim the money, if they do not want their name to be made public.

Big Powerball Wins in 2018

As well as the jackpot winner, there were two players who matched all five main numbers without the Powerball on Saturday night. One of these ticket holders, from Florida, also played the Power Play option to double their winnings to $2 million. The other Match 5 entry, worth $1 million, was sold in Georgia. Go to the Powerball Numbers page to find out more about the latest results, including a full list of all the payouts.

The jackpot had previously been growing since Wednesday June 20th, when a player from Oregon won $150.4 million. The biggest prize given away this year dates back to January 6th and belongs to a New Hampshire woman who scooped $559.7 million. A ticket holder from Pennsylvania also pocketed $456.7 million on March 17th.

The jackpot will now reset to $40 million for the next draw on Wednesday, giving players another chance to snap up a phenomenal prize.
